The September edition of TUNE is dedicated to the Munich-based composer, sound artist and music producer Beni Brachtel, featuring two concerts and an artist talk.
ATTACK DECAY SUSTAIN is a new multi-channel audio installation by Beni Brachtel, commissioned for the TUNE sound programme and the Terrassensaal. It will be installed for six months from the 12.12.25, and in September the artist will present a live adaption of the sound installation across two evenings of performances that complement each other. The work features the cello section of the Munich Symphony Orchestra and marks a continuation of Brachtel’s collaboration with them that started in 2024 when he composed and recorded his Orchestral Suite Monument eines unbekannten Menschen for Ersan Mondtag‘s contribution for the German Pavilion at the Venice Biennale 2024.
On the first evening, the cello section of the Munich Symphony Orchestra performs ATTACK DECAY SUSTAIN. In contrast, the second evening, called Ode to Unpossible Musics, celebrates and cultivates the positive forces in music. The same musicians will perform a selection of Brachtel’s own compositions. A free artist talk with Beni Brachtel will take place ahead of the concert.
Ode to Unpossible Musics
Although works always emerge from specific contexts, they possess a special power that radiates even when detached from their origins.
Ode to Unpossible Musics explores themes that are not unplayable, but rather not made possible for other reasons: they are overlooked, dismissed or tacitly avoided – both in their creation and reception – not out of ignorance, but for personal, often unconscious reasons. After the destruction of eight Instruments, Brachtel searches for the fragile balance point where lightness and heaviness can coexist in eight compositions for cello octet – an emotional tightrope walk that can be as helpless as it is enriching.
The evening is an ode to musical roller coasters, to detours and digressions, to letting go and embracing the unresolved. It honours the beauty of resists definition: the unpossible.
