Since spring 2026, a public garden has been growing on the meadow between Haus der Kunst and the Eisbachwelle. It is envisioned as a place for coming together, exchange and community action. The community garden Ostwiese is an artistic and pedagogical project of Haus der Kunst.

Besides gardening, the focus is above all on the community's engagement with and shaping of a social space. Visitors, staff and cooperative partners of Haus der Kunst share their experiences and knowledge. Everyone who enjoys and takes part in shaping the garden contributes to its ongoing development. Step by step, a community is emerging that takes responsibility, establishes caring and sustainable spaces, and facilitates mutual learning and unlearning.

Would you like to get involved and become part of a gardening community? Then please do come along to one of the action days Open Garten. There, you’ll have the chance to meet new people and engage with the project actively.

Programme

Open Garten takes place every Thursday from 4.30 pm to 6.30 pm.

At Open Garten, you can drop by the Community Garden Ostwiese without prior registration and get involved straight away. There’s always a person on site to answer questions, facilitate the space and have a rough idea of what needs doing. Together, we learn all about gardening and organising a collective space.

Here, "Open" also means: access to resources, the shared use of tools and materials, and an understanding of open source and collaborative working.

Your ideas and feedback go straight into the shaping and planning of the project. Why not just drop by and join in? The Community Garden Ostwiese looks forward to seeing you!

Upcoming events

Project Development

February 2026

During Open Haus February, we began growing various vegetable plants together. Participants were able to take them home to care for them there. The plants will also be growing in the offices of Haus der Kunst staff over the coming months.

March 2026

At Open Haus March we continued building the insect house, which will be part of the community garden.

April 2026

At Open Haus in April 2026 and during MMMHaus, the raised beds were completed together and filled with branches and leaves.

May 2026

As part of the Open Haus in May, cuttings from the offices (mainly beans and red beets), which had already been grown since February, were planted in the raised beds. Seeds were also sown directly into the raised beds, and cuttings that people had brought along or bought were planted.

Juni 2026

At Open Haus in June, we maintained the raised beds and made the community garden a cosier space with seating objects. The chair objects were built by visitors during the "Build your own Chair – Stephan & Schmid" workshop at MMMHaus 2026 and were then donated to the community garden.

We were also joined by Ruth Mahla and Ella von der Haide from Urbanen Gärten München, who shared their knowledge and experience on establishing and organising community gardens.
