About this exhibition catalogue

ICH ALS MENSCH is the exhibition catalogue to the eponymous exhibition on Swiss artist Miriam Cahn and offers an overview on the artist’s five-decade career. Miriam Cahn is one of the most important contemporary artists. In everything from her early, often larger-than-life charcoal drawings to her paintings – her main body of work – she has questioned hierarchical, discriminatory and threatening gender and power constructs. By politicizing the private realm, as well as the woman and her body, Cahn has pushed forth alternative narratives in the fine arts. She has used her imagery to spark a new debate about images of the body and of humans. Significant themes for her include war, flight and expulsion and her exploration of these have made Cahn an alert and critical observer of our current affairs. With contributions by Jana Baumann and Adam Szymczyk among others as well as an interview with the artist.
