Martino Gamper is an Italian designer (b. 1971, Merano) and lives and works in London, Great Britain. His field of activity is diverse and includes exhibition design, interior design, commissioned work and product design for the international furniture industry. His objects often question the boundaries between design and fine art, as aspects of functionality are of secondary importance to Gamper.

With "Sitzung", Gamper developed a project that proposes a new function for the Mittelhalle of Haus der Kunst, offering a new sojourn quality to the whole space, now a site of dialogue, interaction and participation. Gamper has designed a series of new chairs that every morning are differently arranged according to a set of instructions he sends weekly, and that are freely moved around by the public throughout the day.

Martino Gamper has now designed a limited series of wonderful stools or side tables, available in two sizes and visually closely connected to those realised for “Sitzung”.

Gamper develops and produces objects using a variety of artisanal and industrial processes and materials. The Italian wood producer ALPI, with whom Gamper himself developed this new material, manufactured the individual parts of these stools, as it already manufactured the parts of the chairs visible in the Mittelhalle. It consists of remnants of various veneers that are supposed to imitate hardwood. These veneers are glued together and reveal their different layers when sanded and milled. Due to the special material, which is created in dependence on ALPI’s primary wood production, there are variations in the colours of the individual layers, but the stool’s shape or arrangement of the colours will always stay the same.

As a result, no two stools from this limited series are identical - a great chance to acquire a quasi-unique object by this exceptional designer. So don’t miss this opportunity to take home a piece of Haus der Kunst for your own personal „Sitzung“.
