Join us for an artist talk with Ligia Lewis, held on the occasion of her first solo exhibition in Germany, “study now steady.” In conversation with Artistic Director Andrea Lissoni and Chief Curator Xue Tan, the artist will reflect on her recent works and the conceptual threads that inform her practice, with themes such as the embodied legacies of colonialism, the politics of visibility, resistance, and memory.
Working at the intersection of choreography, performance, and film, Lewis challenges the notion of the body as neutral, revealing its profound entanglement with politics, power, and colonial legacies. The talk will focus on the three works presented in the exhibition: A Plot, A Scandal (2022), which explores embodied resistance; study now steady (2023), an installation with live studies; and deader than dead (2020), which stages tragic absurdity.
The conversation will offer deeper insights into how Lewis reimagines Black presence within institutional spaces—not by seeking inclusion, but by confronting the structures that shape perception.
The talk will be introduced by Tobias Staab, Director of DANCE Festival Munich.
Prior registration is not required.
“Ligia Lewis. study now steady” is presented by Haus der Kunst in cooperation with the International DANCE Festival München.
The exhibition is curated by Xue Tan with Marlene Mützel
