Yállá Táwlá: A participatory art and community event at Haus der Kunst, hosted by cleo
Yállá Táwlá grew out of a community project and is intended as a participatory art and social gathering format that playfully invites people to connect with one another. Over a game of Táwlá (backgammon), music, çay, and drinks, we strike up conversations and create a space for casual interaction. At the same time, we teach the rules of the game on the spo t— a game that has connected people across continents and borders for centuries.
Táwlá is played wherever people come together: in coffeehouses, public squares, or bars. The game embodies the interplay of skill and coincidence. If you want to win, you have to take risks, accept setbacks, and constantly readjust your strategy. It’s open-ended, unpredictable, and characterized by mutual learning and respect — which makes Táwlá a metaphor for social coexistence.
The evening will feature musical performances by Chadee, Esther, and Metül, whose sound concepts draw inspiration from the diverse locations and social spaces of the cleo community.
A free beginner’s workshop will be held every hour on the hour.
We are cleo: a migrant collective from Munich that uses artistic interventions to open up spaces and create access. We want to encourage people to actively shape institutions and discourses, thereby enabling participation on an equal basis. We view the museum as a “third place” that can facilitate exchange and conversation, regardless of status, perceived background, or financial resources.
