Info

Through selected objects and biographies, this workshop approaches the subject of Black German childhoods after 1945. The focus is on the children of German women and Black Allied occupation soldiers, as well as their experiences in postwar German society. Their life stories offer insights into everyday life and growing up, into societal expectations, and into the scope for personal agency. Drawing on personal memories, historical sources, and the art installation zwischen den wegen, the workshop also addresses the question of how this history can be told, remembered, and made visible today.

The workshop is open to anyone interested in Black German history, biographies, and artistic approaches to history. No prior knowledge is required.

The workshop will be led by Dr. Azziza B. Malanda, historian and author of „ÜberLebenswege – Erinnerungen und Erfahrungen Schwarzer Deutscher der Nachkriegsgeneration“, Oxford/New York: Peter Lang 2024. Open Access: https://www.peterlang.com/document/1289236.
