In July, acclaimed Danish musician and poet Elias Rønnenfelt comes to Haus der Kunst as part of TUNE, presenting two concerts: his solo performance on the first evening and a collaboration with Gabriel Ferrandini on the second. Additionally, he will take part in an artist talk.
Elias Rønnenfelt is best known as the lead singer and lyricist of the critically acclaimed band Iceage, which he co-founded when he was 16 years old. After over a decade of album releases and world tours, and a side project called Marching Church, in 2024 Rønnenfelt released his debut solo album, Heavy Glory, a raw and introspective work that tells tales of inspiration and perseverance in the face of chaos, isolation and excess. He wrote the material while on the road alone with his guitar, playing shows along the way sometimes in forests, living rooms, bookstores, and chapels.
Rønnenfelt has a wider practice as a published poet and collaborated with visual artist Elizabeth Peyton for his debut book Sunken Heights, which was published by Anthology. Presented in both the original Danish and Rønnenfelt’s own English translation, the book balances fierce, primal reflections on the present with tender, romantic meditations on love, disillusionment, and emotional growth in a smoldering world.
Gabriel Ferrandini has long established himself as a pioneering composer and musician within the European music scene. A visionary drummer who constantly follows a risky and unconventional path, Ferrandini pushes himself to the limit to create a space of confluence between rhythm, texture, and harmony. His solo music is exploratory and lyrical, open to the expressive potential of drum skins, cymbals, and other materials – shaped through amplification, electronics, and the sculpting of silence – in a search for balance between restraint and fire.
Ferrandini is a member of Rodrigo Amado Motion Trio and Red Trio and has collaborated with a wide range of artists including Alexandre Estrela, Alexander von Schlippenbach, Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth) and Evan Parker amongst others. In 2019, he premiered his first staged creation Rosa. Espinho. Dureza. at BoCA Biennale, and since 2021 he has toured internationally as the main composer and performer in Dans la mesure de l’impossible, a theatre piece by Tiago Rodrigues.
On Friday evening, as part of TUNE, Elias Rønnenfelt presents a solo live performance. Without a backing band, this will be an intimate showcase of his work from recent years.
On Saturday evening, Rønnenfelt performs together with Ferrandini. The two artists first met at Lisbon’s legendary venue ZDB and later spent a week together on Madeira Island during an artist residency, which culminated in a public performance in 2019. This year, they reunited for another residency and concert in Budapest as part of Isolation Festival. Their performance has a strong improvisational dimension, emerging naturally from the deep empathy and mutual understanding that has developed through their relaxed and organic collaboration over the years.
Before the concert on Saturday, there will be an artist talk with Rønnenfelt. Admission is free.
