The first edition of Tune in 2026 presents NEW YORK, the deconstructed “girl pop” music project by Gretchen Lawrence and Coumba Samba.
Layering glitchy synths, energizing beats, and deadpan vocals, NEW YORK create effortlessly sexy dance tracks. Their lyrics unfold like casual voice messages, feeling diaristic yet detached. Channeling the dissonance of an information-overloaded world, their production transforms it into almost meditative, danceable electro.
Now based in the city that lend the duo its name, NEW YORK started out when Lawrence and Samba shared a flat in London during the pandemic, bonding over their shared taste in music. Their different perspectives on similar reference points, from electro and footwork to pop, made them natural creative partners who rarely need to over-explain.
Their strong conceptual approach is also reflected in the duo’s graphical language. Visual artists first and foremost, Lawrence and Samba take full control of their visual communication. Graphic design, video editing, and visuals are a major part of their practice, embracing a lo-fi, early-internet aesthetic; an anti-overproduced approach. Their music videos feel like snapshot montages, while their online presence leans into Tumblr-era internet culture.
During the two-day residency from 27.-28.2.26 at Haus der Kunst, NEW YORK will present a separate performance on each evening and there will ba an artist talk on 28.2.26.

NEW YORK is a girl-pop music and performance project by artists Gretchen Lawrence and Coumba Samba. The sampling of royalty free loops and sounds of clicks and cuts are met with chopped vocals and impulsive lyrics. NEW YORK chews up the sounds and visuals of hip hop, pop, and electro and spits them out on to the city streets. From their self-released debut No Sleep Till N.Y. (2022) to the concept album Rapstar (2024) and their new EP Push (2025), NEW YORK continue to reinvent themselves, drawing friends and collaborators into the process and continually reshaping their sound.
