The new format “Passage” by Public Art München will launch on 24.10.25 at Marienplatz with Karimah Ashadu: the artist will present her film Plateau (2021) in the city centre in a completely new way.
Karimah Ashadu's film shows a group of tin miners who earn their living under precarious conditions on the Nigerian Jos Plateau. An adapted version of the original 30-minute film will be shown in the Passage at Marienplatz: Here, the eleven historical display cases and monitors will be filled with new film stills every day. A total of 77 individual photos from the film will be on display in the passageway throughout the exhibition. The scenes have been edited to convey movement and continuity, which is reinforced by English quotations printed on transparencies. Plateau shows the consequences of British colonialism in Nigeria, which to this day continues to pose challenges for miners, among others, who have to struggle with them on a daily basis. Ashadu finds almost poetic images for this complex subject matter, capturing the beauty of the Nigerian landscape on the one hand, while also showing the hard work of the miners on the other.
On 31.10.25 at 8 pm, there will be a talk and screening with Andrea Lissoni, Artistic Director of Haus der Kunst, and Karimah Ashadu, winner of the Silver Lion at the 2024 Venice Biennale. The event takes place free of charge at the Auditorium of Haus der Kunst. This event is a collaboration with Public Art München.
