Schools and young groups

The exhibition “Velvet Terrorism: Pussy Riot’s Russia,” displayed in the former air-raid shelter of Haus der Kunst, serves as our starting point for exploring democracy and human rights with students.

What does democracy have to do with art? Is artistic freedom a human right? What are the limits for artists?

In this workshop, we use playful and performative methods, with a strong focus on open discussion.

The workshop was developed by Lena Scholle and is based on her game CIVIS – The Democracy Game, a cooperative game about democracy and human rights.

A short tour through the exhibition introduces pupils to the themes and working methods of artist Shu Lea Cheang. Her installations at Haus der Kunst explore, among other things, the topic of waste – ranging from food waste generated by changing eating habits to electronic waste as a consequence of an increasingly digital world.

In the Atelier, pupils will then create their own jewellery from discarded electronic components. The workshop also provides insights into e-waste and ways to use resources more sustainably.

This AI-driven exhibition “Philippe Parreno. Voices” offers students a completely new, immersive experience. Instead of focusing on individual objects, the emphasis is on engaging with a place-oriented installation that allows us to experience space and time not only through seeing but also through hearing, feeling, and interacting with dancers within the exhibition.

Our experienced art educators tailor the tour to suit the age group of the class.

For younger pupils, the focus is on shared experiences. Rather than a traditional guided tour, we encourage an active exchange of thoughts and impressions within the group. Parreno’s exhibition transports us to another world. The future? A dream or a wonderland? Together, we’ll explore these possibilities during the tour.

For older pupils, the focus shifts to the exhibition’s concept and Parreno’s approach. Discussions include how he challenges us as visitors to question reality, potentially leading to broader conversations about the truthfulness of images. Additionally, topics such as artificial intelligence in art and climate change are addressed.

Please note that the exhibition is mostly dark, with some areas featuring flickering lights, which some may find uncomfortable. We recommend reviewing exhibition photos in advance to determine its suitability for your pupils.

If you would like to go through the exhibition on your own with your class, please register. Pupils in a class group pay an entrance fee of 2 € per exhibition. For some exhibitions we offer a free children's audio guide or an activity sheet, which young visitors can use to explore the exhibition independently and playfully. Please ask at the ticket office during your visit.

At the beginning of a new exhibition, we invite teachers to a guided tour to familiarise them with the concept and content of the exhibition.
