In resonance with the exhibition “Inside Other Spaces”, Ellen Arkbro and Marcus Pal will begin the TUNE-series. Both artists studied tuning systems with La Monte Young and Marian Zazeela, the duo who devised a series of permanent sound environments called Dream Houses – including an installation in Polling, outside Munich, and who believed that “the whole universe can be understood as just one single vibration…”. Chord by chord and tone by tone, Arkbro and Pal tune sound to space with attention to acoustic and psychoacoustic phenomena. They create environments where listening becomes an active process of creative participation, inviting the listener to gradually be absorbed into the sound itself.
On Friday, the artists present new work exploring the intermediary modes of listening that emerge from carefully tuning and fusing acoustic and synthetic sound. Set in a framework of modulating just intonation modalities, this work sees Arkbro’s recent work for trumpet coalesce with the duo’s long-term practice of synthesizing harmonic forms of stability and flux.
On Saturday, the artists present new work focusing on harmonic sound as an environing phenomenon; on the way it not only extends in space, but also extends and reshapes space itself. For this second and concluding presentation, Arkbro and Pal explore the inner facets of tone, the spatial textures of chordal sounds, and ultimately, the dynamically changing dimensionalities of listening minds.
Both presentations will be set in a continuously sustained sound environment composed by the artists specifically for this occasion. It will be open to listeners prior to the first performance and beyond the second performance.
