Press release

Slauson Malone 1 is the musical and performance project of Los Angeles multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, producer, and visual artist Jasper Marsalis. SM1 explores the ways in which popular music comes into contact with performance art. His new album “Excelsior” (Warp Records) follows the critically acclaimed ‘A Quiet Farewell, 2016-2018 (Crater Speak)’ and 2020’s “Vergangenheitsbewältigung (Crater Speak)” which considered the simultaneous inaccessibility and continuous presence of the past.

The mixture of personal and universal themes is a core motif of Marsalis’ night one performance entitled Stone Breakers. With an ensemble, Marsalis borrows the psychological technique of exposure therapy to blur or even disintegrate the line between spectacle and spectator, punctuating musical pieces with unexpected speech and noise. The Stone Breakers ensemble will be made up of local musicians in Munich who the artist will be meeting for the first time for this project.

On the second evening, Marsalis and his longtime musical collaborator & cellist Nicholas Wetherell, will perform a mixture of material from all three of his studio projects.
