Anja Lechner (Solo concert) / Christian Reiner: Reading of Hölderlin’s "Turmgedichte"

Armenian composer Tigran Mansurian once described Anja Lechner’s cello as "an open window, welcoming all pure sounds of music coming from all corners of the world."  In the present concert the Munich cellist’s panorama takes in music of the Armenian Mansurian and of his contemporaries Giya Kancheli from Georgia, and Valentin Silvestrov from the Ukraine, as well as work of the sixteenth-century Scottish composer and viol player Tobias Hume. Lechner’s solo recital is followed by Vienna-born voice artist Christian Reiner reading from the late poems, the "Turmgedichte", of Hölderlin. Hölderlin has long been an important reference for ECM and its musicians, and for Reiner the spoken word is musical material. His recitations carefully trace the sound of every syllable of these enduring and enigmatic poems.
