In Europe of the post war era, the backdrop of destruction served as a fertile ground for artworks that took a deep analytical look at humanity and the human condition. Existential sculptures interacted with their immediate environment as silent yet expressive witnesses of their time. The intellectual confrontation with the topic began with several discussions, which acted as a run up to the exhibition "Before the law. Post-War Sculpture and Spaces of Contemporay Art," which opened in December 2011 at the Museum Ludwig in Cologne.

Penelope Curtis (born in 1961) has worked amongst other things as curator at the Henry Moore Institute in Leeds before becoming the director of the Tate Britain in London. Her area of specialisation is twentieth-century sculpture.
