Haus der Kunst Series — Insights into Curatorial Practice Vol. 1.

Chief curator Ulrich Wilmes in conversation with Okwui Enwezor, director of Haus der Kunst Since completing his PhD on Italian mannerist Rosso Fiorentino, Ulrich Wilmes has focussed on modern and contemporary art. He started his career as co-organizer of the Sculpture Projects in Münster in 1987. As head of exhibitions at the Portikus Frankfurt / Main (1988–1991), he presented artists like On Kawara, Thomas Schütte, Hanne Darboven, Jörg Immendorff, and Hans-Peter Feldmann. From 1991 to 2000 he was curator and respectively deputy director at the Städtische Galerie at Lenbachhaus. As deputy director at the Museum Ludwig (2000–2007) his exhibitions "Der Blaue Reiter in Köln" (The Blauer Reiter in Cologne), "Edward Hopper", and "Piet Mondrian" were hugely popular with the public.

Since 2008 Wilmes held the position of chief curator at Haus der Kunst, and thus realized a mulitude of exhibitions e.g. on Gerhard Richter, Ed Ruscha, Ellsworth Kelly, Land Art, and currently Georg Baselitz. Besides being an exceptionally productive curator, Wilmes, has also contributed to numerous publications on contemporary art, covering artists including Dan Graham, Matt Mullican, Ulrich Rückriem, Olaf Metzel, Per Kirkeby, Mel Bochner, and Lawrence Weiner.
