Conversation – Renovate/Innovate. David Chipperfield and Okwui Enwezor.

In connection with the upcoming renovation and reshaping of our historic building, Haus der Kunst has initiated a series of public conversations devoted to exploring the state of the museum as a cultural and social conductor in today's global culture. Commissioned in 2013 for the extensive renovation project, the renowned architect David Chipperfield speaks with director Okwui Enwezor under the topic "Renovate/Innovate" about his extensive international experience designing and renovating landmark buildings and museums, about the civic function of museums in the contemporary public sphere, and the role of art institutions as spaces of creativity and production of cultural capital.

Sir David Chipperfield, whose buildings around the world have established an elegant and rigorous example of contemporary architecture, founded David Chipperfield Architects in 1985. His reconceptualization of historic buildings has led to aesthetically astounding transformations that respect the integrity of the original structures and enhance the visitor's engagement with the spaces.

With offices in London, Berlin, Milan, and Shanghai, Chipperfield has designed museums and cultural institutions across the globe, including the lauded Neues Museum on Berlin's Museum Island (1997-2009); the Museum of Modern Literature in Marbach am Neckar (2002-2006); the Hepworth Wakefield in West Yorkshire (2003-2011); the Saint Louis Art Museum in the United States (2005-2013); the Turner Contemporary in Margate (2006-2011); the Museum Folkwang in Essen (2007-2010); the James Simon Galerie in Berlin (2007-2018); Kunsthaus Zürich in Switzerland (2008-2020); the Naga Museum in Sudan (since 2008); the Museo Jumex in Mexico City (2009-2013), and the Nobel Center in Stockholm (2013-2018).

David Chipperfield Architects is currently developing a masterplan for London's Royal Academy of Arts, which has been located in the Burlington House since the 1830s and is slated to reopen in conjunction with the institution's 250th anniversary in 2018.

Chipperfield was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2004; a Royal Designer for Industry in 2006, and elected to the Royal Academy in 2008. In 2009 he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany and was knighted for services to architecture in the United Kingdom and Germany in 2010.

David Chipperfield Architects ist derzeit mit der Renovierung der Royal Academy of Arts in London beauftragt, die seit den 1830er-Jahren im Burlington House angesiedelt ist und deren Wiedereröffnung für 2018 zum 250-jährigen Bestehen der Akademie geplant ist.

2004 wurde David Chipperfield zum Commander of the Order of the British Empire ernannt und 2006 zum Royal Designer for Industry berufen. 2008 folgte die Ernennung zum Royal Academician, 2009 wurde er mit dem Bundesverdienstkreuz ausgezeichnet und 2010 für seine Verdienste um die Architektur in Großbritannien und Deutschland in den britischen Adelsstand erhoben.
