Franz Erhard Walther (b. 1939 in Fulda) was a key figure in the conceptual departure from the image in the postwar European avant-garde.  Beyond the classical understanding of sculpture and painting, Walther formulated a completely new concept of work that included the viewer as an actor as well as elements like place, time, space, body, and language. The human power of imagination as an essential source of both action and form is one of his guiding ideas.

The essence of Walther’s practice - the media connection - is the focus of the exhibition. The retrospective in Haus der Kunst traces the artistic oeuvre of this pioneer of transformative and inter-medial art. Walther’s work continues to develop and radiate in the art scene, to which his receipt of the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale 2017 demonstrates.

For his major retrospective at Haus der Kunst, Franz Erhard Walther has created Left Arm, 2019, in an edition of 10. He uses cotton fabric and sewing techniques to develop activation objects. Left Arm is designed as a concave form that can be worn and thus becomes part of the organism donning it. Walther derived a new design force from the material, which allows for interactions between interior and exterior when the objects are activated. By developing elements that can be worn or entered, the body itself becomes a module and a means of representation. This challenges the viewer’s understanding of traditional pictorial logic. Walther has propelled a shift from the representation of the image to the presence of the body, from seeing to feeling.

With the purchase of this work, you help support the curatorial work at Haus der Kunst and make the live activation program in the exhibition "Shifting Perspectives" possible.
