For the sixth edition of the series "Der Öffentlichkeit" (The Public), Theaster Gates has developed the expansive installation "Black Chapel". The multi-part work reacts to the representative architecture of the 800 square meter middle hall of the Haus der Kunst by contrasting it with a complex narrative that is both politically and spiritually charged. The interplay of sculpture and photography opens up a space that addresses and visually reformulates questions of black history, spirituality and representation.
