Sound Performance: Here Lies Universality / Unfinished Elegy by Lamin Fofana

Lamin Fofana uses sound to take his audience into the realm of dream imagery, where the cyclical narrative forms of our ancestors reverberate like an echo. His electronic music connects ideas of Blackness, migration, displacement, and race with something otherworldly, focusing on nonlinear thought and experience.

Fofana’s tightly woven interests in history and contemporary social conditions, and his method of translating text into the emotional medium of sound are expressed in multisensory performances and large, minimalist installations that combine original compositions, field recordings, and archival material. His goal is to create a space of encounter in which people collectively listen and dream. At the same time, the artist makes it clear that dissonance and disturbance are much more important for him than harmony.

For Echoes, Fofana will present his new performance, Here Lies Universality / Unfinished Elegy (2022), which forms a live extension of his previous sound work, A call to disorder, which has been installed in the Terrace Hall of the Haus der Kunst from July 2021 until March 2022. The elegy Here Lies Universality laments the dominance of Western music theory, the basic structure of which is rooted in the legacy of the Enlightenment, imperialism, and white supremacy, and their persisting mechanisms of exclusion.

On our blog you can read the transcript of a conversation between Lamin Fofana and curator Sarah Miles about unconventional spaces, the artist’s practice and his sources, contradictions in the idea of a pure tone and much more.
