Sound Performance: Fanfare for the Warriors by Lafawndah & Friends

Lafawndah is a French-Egyptian-Iranian singer, artist, and producer known, since her debut album Ancestor Boy (2019), for combining diverse cultural and musical influences with contemporary dance and pop. Her latest album, The Fifth Season (2021), is inspired by N. K. Jemisin’s eponymous science fiction trilogy and explores mythological storytelling through vocals, heavy drone, polyrhythms, and a chamber bass orchestra. In the process, Lafawndah allows complex temporal layering to emerge. In this way she not only combines Jemisin’s apocalyptic narrative with traditional sounds, but also reinterprets compositions from the early twentieth century (such as Lili Boulanger’s Old Buddhist Prayer).

As part of Echoes, Lafawndah presents the collaborative performance Fanfare for the Warriors (2021), which takes the sprawling form of an epic narrative. The interdisciplinary work — named after the album of the same name by the avant-garde jazz group Art Ensemble of Chicago — will encompass a myriad of performances, including a special piece by Lafawndah herself with a five-person choir and the percussionist and composer Sébastien Forrester. Also joining her over the evening will be guests including choreographer and dancer Dalila Belaza, and Crystallmess, whose production and artistry traverses the musical landscape from ambient dancehall to afro-trance. Completing the programme are the contemporary poet Chouf, who presents her subtle and intimate works, as well as artist Paris-based instrumentalist and songwriter Trustfall.
