Event overview
The focus of this guided tour is on the history of the house.
Opened in 1937 as the “House of German Art”, the building was one of the first architectural showpieces of the Nazi regime and a central place of art and propaganda. Today, Haus der Kunst is a globally active museum for contemporary art. Artists who exhibit at Haus der Kunst repeatedly engage critically with the history of the building.
These include Mel Bochner's work “The Joys of Yiddish” on the roof frieze of the house and Tony Coke's work “Some Munich Moments 1937-1972”, which can currently be seen in the LSK Gallery. In a collage of image, sound and text fragments, Cokes exposes the role of the Haus der Kunst in Nazi cultural politics as well as the media strategies of the city of Munich in the post-war period.
