Event overview

Sound Performance: Godspeed by Crystallmess

Christelle Oyiri’s practice as a musician and DJ serves as a starting point for her research and wider artistic work combining performance, installation, and video. Her work playfully highlights forgotten mythologies, the subtle interstice between memory and alienation, DIY culture and technology, and geopolitics and family ties.

In the framework of Echoes, Oyiri will present her film Collective amnesia: In Memory of Logobi (2018), in which she tackles the subjects of club culture and cultural alienation, with which she will perform a live score. Inspired by the writing by Cybernetic Culture Research Unit’s Kodwo Eshun on Afrofuturism and music, this multidisciplinary performance mixes film and DJing with the vocal performance of griology, a West African tradition of oral storytelling.

Collective amnesia: In Memory of Logobi celebrates the forgotten history of logobi, an urban Afro-French dance from the mid-2000s merging hardcore techno and coupé-décalé.

Under her alias Crystallmess, Oyiri will also perform a newly commissioned audiovisual work titled Godspeed (2022), which explores the mythology of the matriarchal Akan religion, practiced in Ghana and the Ivory Coast, and the power of its symbols. Through this sonic study, Oyiri explores pre-colonial spirituality and its dissonance with respect to hegemonic, monotheistic religions.

There will be a Film Screening and a following Artist Talk with Christelle Oyiri on 5.3.22 at 4 pm. Admission is free of charge with the performance ticket.

Free entrance to the event with the Echoes-Pass, which you can pick up at the HDK box office by presenting your Pass ticket. Please, come timely to your first visit to Echoes to receive your pass.
