ECM
Workshop 08.12.12, 12 am
ECM — A Cultural Archaeology
ECM: Behind these three letters lies a Munich-based record label, which has united famous contemporary musicians from around the globe for more than 40 years. During our tour of the exhibition, you will learn not only about the label's history, but also listen to music of different origins while viewing photographs, archival material, sheet music, and films. In short, you will immerse yourself in the exciting world of music producer Manfred Eicher, founder of ECM — in search for the perfect sound.
Painting music — when sounds become pictures
Workshop for children ages 6—10
During the workshop we will not only listen to music, but also immediately experience it and attempt to render the intensity of the tones as well as the silence between the sounds, visible on paper. Just as a musician often plays his or her instrument with both hands, you, too, can try with both hands to paint the music and sounds with colors. You can work alone or paint in pairs, recording your moods on paper. The experience of simultaneously connecting music with the artistic gesture of painting leads to a wide range of results, which we will observe together.
Packaging music — when the sound becomes the cover
Workshop for youths ages 11—14
You are the graphic designer for your own label and are designing an album cover. What will it look like? Translating the audible into the visible is not that easy. Get inspired by songs by ECM artists, or the musical tracks you bring with you. You can choose between watercolor or collage techniques, creating monochromatic works or dynamic multicolored ones, like the sound of a musical ensemble. Is your cover as unmistakable as the sound of the music? Your design of the sounds and rhythms might just reveal your favorite musical style.
Workshops for children 6—10 and 11—14 years of age take place simultaneously to accomodate syblings.
