Manfred Eicher in a discussion with Okwui Enwezor and Thomas Steinfeld
discussion, Video 16.01.13, 7 pm
"Bound to time, music develops its own space, its own musical time, which seems to contain all that is inexplicable and mysterious." (Manfred Eicher)
Against the backdrop of a radical change of course, a conceptual revolution, and a fundamental transformation of the arts, Manfred Eicher founded the record label ECM (Edition of Contemporary Music) in Munich in 1969. From the beginning, the high quality and acoustic clarity of the label's recordings set international standards in the field of contemporary music.
This year, Haus der Kunst is devoting the exhibition "ECM – A Cultural Archeology" – a stroll through 40 years of music history – to the label and its founder, Manfred Eicher. Eicher, Okwui Enwezor and Thomas Steinfeld will discuss the development and significance of the record label from aesthetic, economic, and political perspectives and refer to the "cultural-archaeological" exhibition in Haus der Kunst.
Since 2007, Thomas Steinfeld has headed the cultural section of the "Süddeutsche Zeitung" and has published various essays in books about the record label, including "Der Blaue Klang" [The Blue Sound], (Wolke Verlag, 2010) and "Windfall Light. The Visual Language of ECM" (Lars Müller Publishers, 2010).
Okwui Enwezor is director of Haus der Kunst and curator of the exhibition "ECM – A Cultural Archeology".
The discussion is held in German and English.
