Film screenings Accompanying the Exhibition "ECM – A Cultural Archaeology"
Film screening
Over the past four decades, ECM’s music has become an important resource for contemporary cinema. Label founder Manfred Eicher has immersed himself into film and collaborated extensively with filmmakers especially Jean-Luc Godard and Theo Angelopoulos. The twelve films shown at Munich’s Werkstattkino include works by directors who inspired Eicher in his early years and subsequently influenced his ideas about music production – Bergman, Godard, Bresson, Tarkovsky, and Angelopoulos among them – as well as films with music by ECM artists. The film "Nouvelle Vague" marked the beginning of the ongoing artistic collaboration between Godard and Eicher and included music of Dino Saluzzi, David Darling, and Meredith Monk; as well as Kim Kashkashian playing Hindemith. In Gus van Sant’s "Gerry", Arvo Pärt’s music establishes the emotional climate and Michael Mann’s "The Insider" makes powerful use of Pärt’s "Litany" and Jan Garbarek’s "Rites". The series concludes with "Holozän", based on the novel “Man in the Holocene” by Max Frisch, co-directed by Eicher and Heinz Bütler, and including music of Johann Sebastian Bach, Béla Bartók, Dmitri Shostakovich, Paul Hindemith, Keith Jarrett, and Jan Garbarek.
