Withholding Images - An Essay by David Levy Strauss

Essay

Rather than showing the operation of the U.S. Navy Seals or the dead bin Laden, the famous photograph of the "Situation Room" from 2 May 2011 - the day after the killing of Osama bin Laden – simply shows the reactions of the U.S. government, military commander, and advisers in the Situation Room, including U.S. President Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and others. In an explicit way, the image demonstrates the exclusion of an image, i.e. the censorship. David Levi Strauss refers to this photography as well as to images altered and manipulated in order to change their meaning.
