Critical Reconstruction

The former "Ehrenhalle" [Hall of Honor], that the National Socialists had once intended as an empty backdrop for their projections of power, serves today as the venue for "Der Öffentlichkeit – Von den Freunden Haus der Kunst, an annually-rotating art commission. Alterations on the interior that passed for "architectural denazification" of the building after the war and were intended to conceal the unpleasant legacy, were undone partly in the 1990s and particularly in 2003 in the wake of the "Critical Reconstruction," in order to open a vista on the origins of the erstwhile National Socialist temple of art. Thoughts about the complex and complicated historical process that shaped Haus der Kunst as it is today is a process that is continuing under the directorship of Okwui Enwezor, who has headed the institution since October 2011.
