History at historical sites: Munich as a central cultivator of the NSDAP

Workshop 11.11.17, 9:30 am

History at historical sites: Munich as a central cultivator of the NSDAP
In cooperation with the NS-Dokumentationszentrum München

As a supplement to the current exhibition “Munich, Summer 1937”, Haus der Kunst has developed the workshop "History at the historical location: Munich as a central cultivator of the NSDAP" together with the NS-Dokumentationszentrum München. Both the building’s original aesthetic appearance and the functional significance of its architecture, as well as the future examination of built testimonies as sites of contemporary culture will be considered.

With the “Haus der Deutschen Kunst” and the party buildings at the Königsplatz, the first representative buildings of National Socialist architecture were erected between 1933 and 1937. Designed by Paul Ludwig Troost, these buildings are still closely linked to Munich’s unique role as the center of National Socialist ideology.

Participants in the workshop will visit both the NS-Dokumentationszentrum and Haus der Kunst and learn about the history of these historical sites. These visits are followed by a discussion about the former function of the Königsplatz and the “Haus der Deutschen Kunst”, as well as their architectural conception and use after 1945. What role do the built testimonies of the Nazi regime play in our contemporary debate? What projects have been (and are being) developed and realized as a result of the long-term and active processing of the past? And how should we deal with it in the future? Together with the workshop leaders, participants will also view and analyze documents and material from Haus der Kunst’s Historical Archive.
