Again and Again — Sammlung Goetz at Haus der Kunst

EXHIBITION 15.09.17 – 08.04.18

Again and Again examines the intersection of technical innovations in video art and a renewed interest in models of identity at the turn of the twenty-first century. The exhibition looks at how formal strategies of repetition such as looping, multi-channel installation, split-screen, and experiments with seriality were implemented to present a cleaved and fragmented depiction of the self during the period.

The spectrum of selfhood presented by Again and Again extends from the autobiographical or confessional, as in the work of Mark Leckey or Tracey Emin, to the typified and schematic, as demonstrated by Cindy Sherman or Bjørn Melhus. Of particular importance is the link between the individual and popular, mainstream forms of image production, such as cinema, television, and advertising. The videos and photographs on display look critically at these mass media as well as discourses on internet culture, reproductive technology, bioethics, and gender studies in order to offer resistance to attacks on individual sovereignty.

By employing various techniques such as citation, appropriation, and re-enactment the artists interrogate recurring identity models and how they are perpetuated by the media and social conventions.

Artists: Doug Aitken, Matthew Barney, Candice Breitz, Brice Dellsperger, Tracey Emin, Mathilde ter Heijne, Mark Leckey, Kristin Lucas, Bjørn Melhus, Cindy Sherman, Ryan Trecartin
