Thomas Struth: Figure Ground – Artist talk with Thomas Struth and Andreas Huyssen
Artist Talk 16.06.17, 6 pm
On the occasion of the exhibition "Thomas Struth: Figure Ground," the artist Thomas Struth speaks with the literary theorist Andreas Huyssen.
Like the exhibition, the discussion also explores Thomas Struth's social interests and its various aspects, which represent the important forces of his influential artistic development.
From his first series, Unconscious Places, to his most recent work group, Nature and Politics, Struth's work develops its own analytical quality through his choice of motifs, and their photographic implementation and manner of presentation.
The relevance of public space; the unifying moments of familial cohesion; the significance of nature and culture; and the limits and possibilities of new technologies are questioned as well as the current status of photography and museum culture.
Furthermore, Struth's objectives are characterized by a participatory impulse, as his images and image strategies - based on collective knowledge - permit individual interpretations.
In conversation with the literary theorist Andreas Huyssen, Thomas Struth will discuss his artistic development over the past decades from the perspective of its narrative portrayal. Andreas Huyssen is a professor of German Studies and Comparative Literature at Columbia University in New York; co-founder and editor of the journal New German Critique; and founding director (together with Gayatri Spivak) of Columbia's Institute for Comparative Literature and Society. Important publications include After the Great Divide (1986); Twilight Memories (1995); Present Pasts (2003); William Kentridge, Nalini Malani: The Shadowplay as Medium of Memory (2013); and Miniature Metropolis: Literature in an Age of Photography
