Paper Weight — Genre-defining Magazines 2000 to Now / White Zinfandel

Video

Founded by graphic designer Jiminie Ha (who produced the first two issues in collaboration with New York architectural firm Leong Leong), White Zinfandel revolves around food and art, although it cannot accurately be classified as a magazine about either. Instead, "White Zinf," whose title refers to a semi-dry, only semi-respectable California rosé, reinvigorates these two well-trodden genres through a kind of editorial fusion, creating a stone soup for New York’s young creative class for which the notion of taste serves as both the catalyst and the lowest common denominator of a larger cultural conversation. Formatted as an amalgam of submissions and commissions, each issue of this biannual publication centers on a food-related theme, such as food fights or TV dinners, and each one is launched with a chef-curated dinner. White Zinfandel presents an original series of place mats featuring culinary arrangements inspired by rap lyrics. Also on view is artist Item Idem’s HUNGER, an ad culture-inspired short film starring Japanese competitive eater Takeru Kobayashi and produced by White Zinfandel. The wall collage consists of loose spreads from the magazine’s current issue.
