Paper Weight — Genre-defining Magazines 2000 to Now / Bidoun

Video

"Bidoun" was founded in 2004 by Iranian-American Lisa Farjam and responds to an aspect underrepresented in Western media coverage by focusing on art and culture in and from the Middle East. With its main office based in New York, "Bidoun" encourages collaborations that evade, ignore, or surpass the borders of the culturally dynamic yet politically charged region, offering a platform for cultural and artistic production and exchange to a global diaspora. "Bidoun" not only reaches a magazine readership but also functions as a study group, a community, and, concretely, a collection of literature and research culled from the four corners of the world and brought together as the "Bidoun Library". Along the wall of its “big magazine,"Bidoun presents a selection of books from the "Bidoun Library", as well as various objects the team has come across over the past nine years that relate to the concept and conceptualization of the Middle East. "The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Middle East Conflict," (Mitchell Geoffrey Bard, ALPHA, 2008) is suspended above the magazine's title (spelled out in both Arabic and Roman letters) — a nod to the complicated nature of the Middle East as both a geopolitical and a Western cultural notion. At once humorously random and suggestively open to interpretation, a goat wearing boots stands on top of an encroaching desert landscape. It is part of a series from issue No. 28, in which taxidermy animals wearing a variety of human outfits were used in lieu of traditional portraiture.
